Ryan Iwahashi concentrates his practice on complex intellectual property litigation (including patents, patent licenses, standards agreements and trade secrets), as well as proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. His deep background in computer science and software development helps him to understand complex technologies and explain difficult technical concepts to judges, juries, senior management, and boards of directors.
Ryan has represented clients in matters high-stakes litigation involving cutting-edge technologies in a wide range of fields such as computer software, computer engineering, networking, consumer devices, cellular standards, Wi-Fi standards, data storage, streaming media, localization, artificial intelligence, and business methods. He has extensive experience in all aspects of litigation (including discovery, motion practice, trial, and appeals) in federal district courts, federal appeals courts, state courts, the Patent Trial and Appeals Board, and the International Trade Commission.Ryan's representative matters include:
- defending Cisco in multiple litigations in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, including successfully obtaining dismissals of patents with prejudice prior to motions for summary judgment;
- defending Rubrik against multiple competitor infringement actions, including successfully defeating a motion for a preliminary injunction without a hearing;
- defending Dell in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas against WSOU in a 12 patent dispute, including filing successful petitions for inter partes review;
- defending AT&T against over 20 allegedly standard essential patents spread across various cellular and Wi-Fi standards in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas;
- defending Avi Networks against Citrix in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware, including obtaining narrowing claim constructions and filing successful petitions for inter partes review;
- defending Foxconn, Wistron, Pegatron, and Compal Electronics in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California in case involving complex patent licenses and standard essential patent issues;
- representing Fitbit in a trade secret evidentiary hearing at the International Trade Commission against a competitor;
- representing SharkNinja against iRobot in an evidentiary hearing before the International Trade Commission in a case involving robot cleaning devices;
- representing Peloton against DISH Networks in an evidentiary hearing before the International Trade Commission in a case involving streaming media.
